I am looking for a good source for J-Belt step pulleys/sheaves. Any one know a good place, I need these for a lathe I am building, I am trying to get sizes for my 3 speed ranges.

any good hardware store, or parts store. Mcmaster Carr, etc.

Actually they do not have j-belt step pulleys, I have looked at Mcmastercarr, grainger, MSC, ect. I am beginning to think I will have to get them made up.

Two questions:

1. J-belt opposed to V-belt, what's the difference?

2. did you check surpluscenter.com?

http://www.mcmaster.com/catalog/115/gfx/small/9003kc1s.gifJ-Belt is like multi v-belts "wider and flatter", I want 10 grove which is roughly 1" wide actually smaller but close. V-belts are easy to come by. I have found some metric v-Belt step pulleys that might work but I am not happy with the ratios, I may just have to compromise, or have the J-belt's turned in aluminum.

Is a J-belt the same or different than a "Poly V Belt". When I bought one for my compressor they called it a Poly V Belt.

looks like they might be the same.

On this site I found the truth:
Poly V - is a registered trademark of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company
Micro V - is a registered trademark of Gates Rubber Company

Probably end up buying 6 pulleys, 2 of each specific size to get the ratios you want and just putting 3 of each size on the shafts, or going with a Variable speed gearbox.

If you are going for non slippage you might consider cogged flat belts, I have used them on several machines I made for others. And that is what I used on the 3 Septic tank pumper trucks I built because V belts would have put too much side pressure on the input shaft of the milking machine vacum pumps I used that were PTO driven from the truck transmission.
