When I roughed out this bowl last year I couldn’t believe the bugs! Pulling it from the DNA bath, it looked like I had thrown a tablespoon of coffee grounds into the alcohol! At least they left some cool markings and the holes run all the way through the walls of the bowl.

White Birch bowl, 8 ¼” diameter x 3” high. Rim is ¼” wide and tapers immediately to 1/8” for the rest of the bowl. The bowl is feather-light and has absorbed 2 saturation coats of Minwax Gloss Wipe-On Poly so far. Am thinking of leaving the bowl as is – instead of going for the glossy look. What do you think?

As always, your comments, critiques and opinions are welcome!

Thanks for looking!

Very nice as is, but part of me wants to see it super glossy. Either way, it's a winner.

Agree with David, shinny or satin will look very nice. How it's going to be used could make a difference on if you want it shinny or not.

I think it looks good just as is, like all your work it is great.

That's another beautiful bowl. For me, the bug work gives is sort of a natural look. Because of that I think I would let it also have a natural looking finish.

Steve it is a beauty. I would leave it as is.

Nice looking bowl Steve. I would leave the finish the way it is, a high gloss would take away from the natural/rustic look of the wood, IMO

Beautiful bowl. I would not do a glossy finish. I think it would loose the rustic look.

That's a pretty thin bowl! I vote with the others, that a glossy finish would look out of place given the extra "decoration" ma nature provided. Looks great.

Very nice Steve. I like the contrast of the small foot and the wide opening. The bugs did a nice job as well and I vote for more finish but not too shiny. I like gloss finishes on smaller objects like peppermills etc.
