There was a challenge to turn a mushroom on one of the other turning sites, so I turned this for it. I've made some like this in the past. This one is turned from a piece of apple. It is 5" inches tall. It makes for a shallow box but puts a different twist on a mushroom.
Thanks,
Jack

Jack - love the imagination! Great form and even the grain of the Apple adds to the effect! Pretty cool idea! Thanks for sharing!

cool mushroom. I was expecting the stem to be the box.

Jack, I really like that! I think I will put that on my list of things to turn, it has lots of potential to use my threading jig! Very nice and thanks for sharing it with us!

I've seen a lot of turned mushrooms but I think this is the first that was also a box. That's really cool. I also like the way you photographed it in a natural "mushroom" setting.

Now that is a neat looking box. It will definately be on my to do list to make some of those.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. It is a fun project that I've had a few of my High School Students do over the last couple of years. Do you think I've actually created something new? I just figured someone else would have made a box similar to this before. It would be cool if I could say that I actually created the first one. Something that is becoming very hard to claim with all unbelievably creative turners in the world.
Thanks,
Jack

Jack,
Must be magic.

Flashback.

I do like the form though, Jack. You should box that up with some dark shavings that look like moss.

I just did a search and there seems to be several other turners doing boxes out of mushrooms. I don't know exactly if they are just hollowing the stem or doing something like mine. They don't show any pic's of them open. There goes my claim to fame.:D:D
Thanks again,
Jack

Let's see, a beautiful and clever design, well executed in my favorite wood? Please take this as it's intended... I hate you so much. :D

Doggone it...my wife saw the mushroom and she thinks it's the "bee's knees"!(Me too. Really nice!) Now I have to at least try one. Gotta learn to shut down the 'puter when she comes in the office...kidding of course.
I'm a long way from anything like that, but I'm trying to get there.
More dumb questions to follow...

I showed my wife, and she loved it too. I've never tried a box. Guess I better start.

This is going into my TODO list, even if not in box form, I don't see much practical use for the box (though it IS cool). But i LOVE the form... so into "woodturning projects" folder they go...
