Hi, I have a vintage Sargent plane and I was wondering what the name of the steel used for the blade was called. On the blade it's stamped Sargent No 422 NEWHAVENCT U.S.A. The underside of the lever cap has the numbers 418-32 and the plane is 22" long. To be clear I'm looking for the industrial name used to identify the steel, thanks.

A picture plus some estimate of when the blade was made will help someone give a better response.

The numbers probably have nothing to do with the steel type. The steel is probably a simple carbon steel like 1095,or 1080.

The 7th plane down is titled 'Antique 5260 Sargent No. 7'

Has the same numbers as mine and looks the same. As far as the date, I found a similar looking plane with the same numbers that was supposedly made in the 1890's, I believe. However the value of the plane might have been much more then the one in the picture above so I don't know.

George, I believe the number on the blade (422) is the model of the plane itself. I was just posting it to help identify the parts.
