Jet Black Bog Oak

Has anyone worked with this kind of wood? And does anyone know where you can buy it? I was looking at a box making book and they were using it. Looked similar to ebony in color.

Thanks Richard

Here in the Amazon I harvest sunken wood every year when the rivers are down. Many logs are grey to jet black when sawn and the color is due to the wood being in the acidic waters of the black water rivers feeding the Amazon.

The tanic acid in the water over the years turns many species dark to black. I assume the bogs are acidic also and any wood that will resist the elements of the bog will probably turn also after many years. I am not a fan of spanish cedar but when taken from an acidic river it is incredible.

Trees and logs sunk in sweet water rivers such as the Amazon do not turn but maintain their normal color.

Richard,

Ireland's the place for bog oak, I think, although you might be able to find it here, too.
