Title says it all. I went to the local borg stores here in Atlanta and they all run around $25-26 for 3/4 and $20 for 1/2. Is this roughly what you pay or are there better places to find MDF?

One thing I thought was strange was that the plywood (not great plywood obviously) was roughly 1/2 the price. I would have assumed the plywood would cost more.

Thanks.

That seems to be the going rate for MDF around here (NE Ohio) although Typically cabinet grade plywood is more that that!

The reason for the price difference is most likely that the ply is from China, and the MDF is from Canada/USA.

MDF comes in a bunch of different weights/ Grades..

Now I know this is hard to believe, but the Borg doesnt often stock the Premium MDF.

The Wholesale cost on " Silver " .. is about $18.50 a sheet.. It retails for $25.00 ish..

The premium item is usually closer to $32.00 .. However in this economy, who knows ??

The Gold/ Silver/ Bronze rating is not really accurate.. its actually rated in Lbs.. but I would have to look it up..

Rick,
Please don't go to a lot of trouble but, what is the difference in the grades and how does one know what grade he's looking at?
Thanks,
Gene

Last I purchased, I got from my Hardwood supplier. It seemed like better stuff than what I had previously purchased form the Borg. As I recall, it was about $21 a sheet, several dollars cheaper than the Borg. This was for the standard oversize 4' x 8' 3/4" thickness.

I just bought 4 sheets of the 4' x 9' x 3/4 variety. I think I paid around $45 per sheet from local lumber yard.

3/4x49x97=23.16 the 1/2x49x97=18.48, purchased from my local hardwood supplier. I found a new hardwood supplier this AM, but that will be a new post after I visit with them. ;)

My pricing is not that good...

At my local HD it's about $30 for a 4'x8' sheet of 3/4" MDF by Sierra Pine.

$25 ish for a 1/2" sheet.

This includes the fairly recent price drop... It used to be $32 for a sheet of 3/4" MDF. :(

I can remember 5 or more years ago when it used to be $22 for a sheet of 3/4" MDF. I bet back then it used to cost other people $15 for a sheet... heh

So you are saying that 3/4" ply is $12-13 per sheet. I am coming to your neighborhood!!

The equivalent of 49USD for standard quality MDF, 3/4x49x97. In Sweden that is.

Better MDF is a little more dense and more resistant to damage. One way to compare is to try digging a sharp objects into the face. Better brands will resist scratching or gouging better. Also try chipping out an edge with your finger nail. If the outer layer easily flakes off, your not dealing with very "good" material.

I have seen HD selling what we call ultralight (low density fiberboard) labeled as MDF. I do use plenty of this stuff in my work, but I don't think this stuff is very good for the average Depot shoppers intended purpose.

I'm paying $28 for top grade MDF, around $35 for ultra light in 3/4" thickness. The ultra light machines much better and is far easier to handle but not as durable, if you can call ANY mdf product durable. We make a lot of door panels with ultra light for paint grade raised panels. I would not want to try and lift a 1 3/4"X4X8 sheet of regular MDF on to the panel saw on any regular basis!:D Nor would I want to try and hang the door of which they are then made.

From my cabinet material supplier, Imagination & Company Hardware, i pay $24.98 per sheet of 3/4" MDF
$20.00 for 1/2" MDF, $32.96 for 1" MDF and $17.94 for 1/4" MDF. volume discounts start at 100 sheets.

I dont know the prices for the big box stores.

I pay $35 a sheet for the premium grade I use for patterns, and $28 for the normal mid grade the my supplier stocks. I use the mid grade for exterior signs.

4x9 sheets are $15 each, 1/2" or 3/4". I just go to the local furniture factory and pick up a couple when needed. They do most of the CNC work around the area, so they stock a lot.

That's a great price for 3/4 MDF, Luis.

Although I'm not sure why you bumped a 4 year old thread.

3/4 MDF is about $35 now, and 1/2" is about $25. Lowe's prices.

We have two places to get them from here. Big blue borg or big orange borg. Both $35 for 3/4. No grades, just expensive damn panels.

And I just noticed I am replying to a 4 year old thread as well........

How does anyone even come across a 4 year old thread, let alone reply to it?
