Gary Whitt blessed me with this burnisher he made from a car engine part. The handle is solid Cherry with a black pvc ring. I now need to perfect my cabinet scraper sharpening skills--no more excuses. Thanks again Gary!

Pretty slick, Chris! I'm guessing it is an old pushrod? :D Do you know if he tempered it? I'm not sure this is necessary but I'm just curious.

Looks like a push rod to me...on the other side of the rocker arm from the valve and connected to the lifters which run on the cam shaft which goes round and round.
:D but that's probably more info than you wanted to know. ;)

If it's a pushrod, there should be no reason to have to temper it. It is already tempered to a high Rockwell number.

The key to a good burnisher is not only its hardness but having it polished highly. If it is not very smooth, it will gall the edge of the scraper (pull off material) leaving a ragged edge.

Smallblock Chevy pushrod.

I kept two home-made burnishers.

Glad to be of help to you, Chris.
