This is a heavy walled cottonwood bowl, 11.5" dia by 3.5" tall, with 1.5" thick walls. I cut a 3/4" wide 3/8" deep groove into the rim, glued some 'endgrain' sections of deer antler into the groove, and then grouted around them with a mixture of ground coffee and titebond glue. Because I had to use several small pieces of antler you can see the variations in the color and texture of the antler. The finish is just some antique oil so far, not buffed or anything.

Curt - I always look forward to your turnings as they are innovative and open our imaginations!

Once again you have surprised us with materials used and a form that is slightly heavier than the norm. Looks outstanding to me! Beautiful wood! The antler slices add color and unique form to the rim. The black color of the bonding material adds a lot of depth and contrast to the bowl.

As always, impressive work Curt! Thanks for sharing!

Curt,
That is a neat piece...I thought the decorative ring was made with slices of geodes until I read your description!

Really nice, we have cottonwood everywhere and did not really like that wood. I may have to change my mind.

Thanks for all the nice comments!

I can't take credit for this idea. I got the idea from a magazine article that a friend brought when he visited from Colorado. The article featured a turner named Shirlen Heath http://www.coloradocountrylife.coop/ (http://www.coloradocountrylife.coop/) . One of his pieces was a hollow form with a band of antler pieces filled with crushed Chrysocolla. I just did a bowl rim instead and used coffee as the filler.

Thanks again!
