View Full Version : Summary List of Member's Shop Characteristics

I decided to summarize the information contained in the "what the Size of your workshop?" thread (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=10114) in a table. I will update the table as additional posts are made to that thread or to this one. You can also send me a private note with corrections and information for the summary if that is easier.

A table containing the information (in descending order of area) appears in post #2 in this thread. It was last updated on the 28th of September, 2004.

I have already had one benefit from constructing this list. I was able to show Margaret (my wife) that the shop she considers to be very very big is in the lower portion of the list that is ordered by size.

Frank,

A couple tricks I learned when posting tables:

(1) Use the preview button to see how things will look
(2) Elimnate all spaces and lines...cram everything together so it is almost impossible to see anything and edit it
(3) Keep a separate file of all the html coding in Notepad or Wordpad and use cut and paste
(4) Keep playing with the preview to find other little nuances.
(5) Also, when you edit the original post, you won't find your html commands, just the table itself...replace it with your saved file in (3) because if you directly edit it, it will be moved down in spacing.

The reason you have problems with tables is that you are posting under another html command (I forget the name of it) and it messes up the spacings so you need to elimnate all the lines or many of them.

Doing that Bessey GB thing was quite challenging. You might just post an Excel spreadsheet if you don't want to deal with it.

I have decided not to maintain this version of the table any longer.

Table? Where's the table? :)

It's there. I expect that you did not look down far enough. There is a lot of empty space before the table that I can't figure out how to get rid of. Any help from HTML experts would be appreciated.

You can add that my shop is also a separate outbuilding, although fomerly a 3 1/2 car garage. (Building is 21' x 44' total) It has an unfinished upper floor, if that is relevant.

Thank for the chart. When we setup our shop for filming the magazine, we found that the typical shop (at the time of our surveys) was about 10 x20. I can see that by the posters here, the typical (or average) shop is much larger. Perhaps it is time for us to re-do our studio to closer reflect that of home shops and make it BIGGER!

My shop is 32' X 50' w/ catherdral ceiling. Max height 13'6". It is a seperate bldg and also has 12' X 50' lumber storage.

Thanks for putting this together the info is very interesting.

Chris, I'm not sure that the "average" shop is a lot bigger. Remember, that the sampling that Frank is working from is a) not scientifically/statistically valid and b) there are a number of "pros" and more-than-serious woodworkers represented on the list. I think that your "one car garage" setup is probably more in line with the true majority of hobbyist woodworking setups, even in the total SMC membership community which is currently thousands of people, rather than the few dozen that responded to the original thread as well as additions in this one. What you might consider doing is adding considerations to the projects, such as, "If you have a shop larger than our typical one-car garage area, you can (do something a different way)..."

Thanks for compiling this Frank, that's a lot of work.

I'm not surprised to find my basement shop would be near the bottom - 15' x 18' with a 4' x 6' cedar closet notched out of one corner - roughly 250 sqft. It works for me - hopefully - if I get to building it, a play room will stand next to it so I can entice the little man into the shop and building things at an early age. :p

:( I responded to that thread and am on page 4 of the thread but did
not see mine listed. I'll get over it. Just kidding.
For the info -- my building is separate 30 x 40 - 2 story 8 ft ceiling and wish they were 10 ft.

My workshop is 17.5' x 17.5' with almost 7' ceiling joists. It's a 70 year old 2 car garage that hasn't had a car in it in the 20 years I've lived here. Last year I had the concrete floor replaced (a nightmare) and all new electrical outlets installed (a real treat). While the electrician was running wire from the house to the garage, I also had him run phone wire for a phone. The stud walls are now insulated but, since the garage has a high roof, the insulation was just to make me feel better. The walls are covered in 1/2" plywood so I can mount things wherever I want to. I also had installed an openable sky light and an attic vent fan that works on a thermostat. The "shop" is big enough to store all my tools and equipment, but not quite big enough to work in. Luckily I'm in a climate where I can open the garage door and roll out the big tools when I want to.

Thanks for creating the list of shop sizes and specs. It is very interesting.

I will update the table as additional posts are made to that thread or to this one.Frank,

Thanks for putting in all this effort!

Here are my stats: 18' x 20' x 8'4" (ceiling) for 360 square feet. It's 2/3 of a three car garage.

Interestingly, the lack of a fourth wall, i.e., between my shop and the part still used for a car, is both a blessing and a curse. It's a curse because it deprives me of another place for heavy duty, built-in shelves, but at the same time, by moving the car out it gives me ample run-off space for the table saw, planer, etc.

Frank,

Pretty interesting. I expected lots more 400sf garages.

Mine is around 31x14 + 10x16 in an 'L'. If you count inches, it is 589sf. Basement with 9' ceilings.

Absolutely...Mr Marino will give you 10% off on a single purchase of three Festool tools...oh, that's the regular price. Sheesh! It was a thought... :D

How long did it take you to narrow your list to just 3 :D

Mine is about 20 X 21, a little over half of a detached 3 1/2 car garage, with an 8' ceiling. The other half is my wifes garage for the car and a wall of kitchen cabinets I salvaged. Sometimes, OK often, my stuff, usually wood, leaks over into her garage, but only temporarily of course. This goes on for a while until she threatens to send me on a dump run and I have to find a place for my stuff back on my side.

Thanks for the tips Chris. This evening I plan to "publish" a revised list with all the new input that I have received and will follow some of your suggestions.

Re your specific points:

1) I am already doing this

2) I will try this and hope that it gets rid of all the space at the front.

3) I was already keeping a separate file of the html coding

4) OK, I will try Preview some more

5) I did not know whether or not I would get the html back on Edit but played it safe in case I did not. That why I saved the file referenced in 3.

I've got a two car finished garage (no cars.) 17' 9" by 19' 3", with 8' 3" ceilings. The shorter dimension is actually closer to 19' with the little step-up at the back of the garage. I do have a small bench, pegboard and my drill press on the step-up, but most of the space is dedicated to the furnace and water heater.

Gee Frank, guess I'm getting too slow reading and too fast posting, as I posted my shop size to the old post "Before" I read your post here that you weren't going to maintain the chart anymore. Anyhow, mine is a separate bldg, 25+' x 32+' with 11' tall sidewalls and approx 13' tall in the center, Plus a 5' x 20' shed under a continuation of the main building's roof line. 5' of the shed is walled off as a restroom opening into the shop & the rest is for the future installation of a DC Cyclone and an Air Compr., and gardening tools. (Approx 900 sq ft total)

The one in post #4 was in ascending order by surname

Thought I would give you my stats - 11'8'' x 11'8" , 137 square feet, 8' ceiling, no heat. I built the shed before I really got into ww. I don't have space for the lawnmower anymore - it stays under the overhang, under a tarp for the winter. Seems to me, one of the reasons for building the shed was to get it ( and other stuff ) inside! Thanks for the interesting chart.

Hello Frank,
Been a while since I have been back here, but here goes.
My shop is attached to the house and is dedicated to my craft. It is a remodeled
3-car garage and now only has one garage door that is 12'x 7'. There is an entrance to the shop through the utility room and also a side entrance. The building is a 2 floor (1.5 story) Cape Cod style building that measures 31' X 21' X 8 inside dimensions. The upstairs serves as my office and photo studio. It has a 1/2 bathroom, and some storage space. The usable square footage for the shop downstairs is 651 sq' and upstairs is 325 sq'. The first floor has electric heat, A/C, and humidity control. The upstairs has propane heat and A/C.

Here's my shop info. Or at least what it will be when finished. I'm siding it now and can't wait to get inside. I had a concrete contractor do the footings and flat work. I'm doing the rest. Well, with a little help from my son and son-in-law. The whole building is 24' deep by 44' long. There are 2 garage bays on the left. The shop is on the right side... It's 22' by 24' deep.
