I had a piece of figured sugar maple with a nasty bark inclusion, but I turned it anyway with lotsa epoxy. I tried to copy a David Marks bowl I saw on TV a year ago. Not perfect by any means but I'm basically satisfied with the first "rimmed" attempt. Best part is that I have a bit of nice sugar maple leftover for the next attempt :).

2 1/4" X 10 1/2" - Eight coats of minwax antique oil final buffed with Renaissance wax.

Great looking bowl Terry! Love the figure of the wood! You did a great job with the finish - sure highlights the wood well!

Thanks, Steve and Alex. BTW Steve, your green dyed bowl is simply outstanding. Reminds of the hues I see in the evergreen and moss forests.

Beautiful bowl. Great form, and the black rim nicely balances the bark inclusion. BTW, nice foot.

Terry,

You did DM proud. That is an outstanding piece.

Is the rim multiple pieces like the one DM did?

Are you worried about movement in the main maple piece affecting the rim?

I must say I love how the figure radiates from the dark spot and the shape of the bowl is great! I think a dark rim on just about anything is a perfect way to top things off!

Great job,

Jeff

Very nice Terry. Without reading your post first, David's bowl was the first thing I thought of when I saw yours. I went and looked on his site and found the bowl he turned and I think yours is much better!

Terry what a lovely bowl. Your fine finish sure makes that figure pop out. The dark rim is a great compliment to the bark inclusion too. I admire it so much I saved it to my favorites folder for later duplication...Bill...

Gee, thanks for so many compliments!

Gregg & Toney - after facing the bowl flat on the top side, and roughing out the inside, I cut a section of 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 12" ebony into 3/16" x 12" strips and then used a template to mark and cut curved segments (about 7 or 8) rfrom the ebony strips to CA glue on the flat surface. All the segments had to be disc sanded carefully to perfectly match the next section. The last piece was the most difficult to match. Then, placed back on the lathe to final turn the bowl and ebony.

The sugar maple was green when initially rough turned. I soaked in DNA for 4 days after roughing out and then wrapped and shelved for three weeks. Hopefully, it will remian stable enough not to distort from the rim.

I'm anxious to try some more of similar style with different materials.

Very nice result. I too, immediately thought of the DM episode with that bowl. Nice wood and a really nice outcome. I bet you will make another.
