...why there is not a plethora of wood puzzles somewhere on this forum. I have searched but not found any of the take-apart puzzles made of simple wood pieces. The idea to make some of these as Christmas gifts came after seeing several interesting puzzles on Amazon. I assume copyright infringement is not an issue unless one sells the item. But then assume has its own negative connotations.

Google 'BURR' puzzles. I've made a few and they are fun gifts.

I made a LOT of burr type puzzles for Christmas gifts a few years ago. They are fun to make, but take time. It is a good exercise in making precisely sized pieces if you want a good fit (and watch out for climate changes).
Is that the kind of puzzle you meant, or did you mean jigsaw puzzles?

Yes, the BURR puzzle. I found it and thanks for the info. Think I might try a few but must get the pens finished first. I had no idea they had computer solutions to these puzzles; its a much bigger endeavor than I thought! Again thanks,
Chris

Look on the WOOD magazine website. Almost every issue, they have a project for a kids' toy. I've seen several puzzles.

If you haven't found this (http://www.johnrausch.com/PuzzlingWorld/default.htm) site yet, it has a lot of information about burr and similar puzzles. Chapter 23 is about woodworking techniques.
