At the bottom of this thread (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=121088) you will see I am making hollow vessels using allen wrench tools. The tools could be used to make ornaments as well. Remember you don't have to have smooth uniform wall thickness. You are just hollowing to reduce weight.

1 option is to buy a tool from Bob Rosand, which is very reasonable priced, making tools is another aspect of woodturning

http://www.rrosand.com/tools.shtml

the tool works well for hollowing 2 inches and under, it also helps if you use a 1 inch square tool rest with it

black willow burl, persimmon, english yew, damson plum, maple, and of course spalted southern red oak

there is a learning curve to everything, i had hollowed before so that part was not to bad, my finials ... well... lets say i am at the bottom of the curve again...i plan to improve making finials... i believe the learning is what i enjoy, woodturning has so many aspects and tangents one can follow ... enjoy...:D

I would say +1 on the Bob Rosand tool, just too inexpensive NOT to get one. It does ornaments just fine, and will give you an intro into other hollowing, if you decide to go that route.

Phil I sent you a pm. I use the Rosand tool also. On his DVD he uses a small 1/4" scraper to do the initial hollowing and then goes to his bent tool. I also made one out of a allen wrench that works pretty well. Just keep it sharp.

I use a tool made by Don Derry He has a small hollowing tool with a stabilizing bar to take up the side torque. Works very well for small hollowing and to start a large hollow form around the opening. G

Made my own out of an allen wrench. It works great. I can hollow a hickory nut with it as well as an ornament.
