Well, it's clearly a smoothing plane. Hard to tell much more from the photo.

The shape of the lateral adjuster lever implies that it MIGHT be a Sargent. It's a late model version of whatever it is, based on the tote shape - I usually see more oval sections, instead of the flat sides, on earlier planes.

Usually - unless, of course, the iron's been replaced - you can tell by cleaning off the very top of the cutting iron. There's generally a company name or logo there.

Whatever the make, if the frog is cast iron, it's worth a cleanup, lubing, and sharpening. Then give it a whirl. The No. 4 size is very useful.

The picture is a little too fuzzy to tell.

Stanley used that type of bent over lever on some of their second tier planes like Four Square and Defiance.

Is the lever cap smooth or does it have a textured design?

It has handles of some light wood varnished with dark varnish to make it look more like rosewood. probably a cheaper Stanley knockoff.

Not a Miller Falls -- the chip breaker is one piece, not two like most Miller-Falls planes. Tote looks like a Fulton or some other second line. Need more picutes with details....
