A few more (preparing for Christmas, only 80-odd days left).

Production is on a roll! If you are taking votes, I like the walnut and maple(?) best. Nice contrast.

Thanks John. The dark arches are walnut in the center, maple and then shedua on the outside. The other arches are mahogany and ash (not as orange as they look in the pic). The Woodsmith knock-off is walnut and beech. BLO and shellac for everybody ;-)

They look great Glenn. I really like the rings that you came up with. If I ever get my new grizz bandsaw set up, I may have to try some of these.

Could you give a little more info on the finishing schedule? How many coats, and such? Finishing is still frustrating for me and would like to learn as much as I can.

Couldn't be easier. Sand to 220, flood with BLO (first coat will soak in in a few minutes), flood with BLO again. Wait 20 - 30 minutes and aggressively wipe off any excess. Let dry a few days, rubbing off any weeping now and again. 6 coats of clear shellac sand with 400 - 600 or rub with a gray syntho pad between coats so it ends up super smooth. Let dry overnight and hit it with some pastewax.

You had to remind of how many days left before Xmas, didn't you? :) Very nicely done and you have given me a few more ideas as I need to get cranking soon. I am starting finish on another project today and hopefully the First Lady will allow me a bit of time to do some gifts. She has already ordered the next piece but maybe I will get a short holiday to do some for her family. :D

Very nice stuff there...

Glenn,

Nice work.

Are the arches all cut from the same block? What size was the original block?

Thanks,
Jim

The two groups of three are out of the same block per group. One was about 9" x 4.5" x 2" and the other was about 8" x 4" x 2".

Glenn,

When putting these arches on graph paper it looks like they are about one inch thick. Is that correct??

Thanks,
Jim

I made about 10 of those rectangle ones 2 years ago for xmas from a woodsmith article. Theres alot that goes into that little thing with all the angles. Doesnt look like much until you look at how its made.
Nice job on the arch ones, good use of the cutouts from the big one. So I huess you can get 6 out of one square block.
