I just finished this yesterday and thought the wood grain turned out so well I wanted to have a little fun and see how many fellow turners could guess the wood type.

Total WAG (wild a** guess) here, but I would say carpathian walnut. Yep, I knew I was wrong.

Jack - the only thing I know for sure (I think) is that it is not local to the U.P.! Beautiful wood! Like the color variations and the wide growth rings! Nice bowl BTW! Looking forward to finding out what wood this is!

Beautiful piece! The form, finish and wood....gorgeous.

I'd hope it's turned from free wood?

Beautiful job--I would guess from the green and purple streaking it would be poplar

Mike got it. It is poplar "Tulip Poplar" that turned out very nice. The crazy thing about it is the outside shape was roughed out by one of my old students. He gave up on it when the tenon broke off when he first tried to hollow it out and it was just forgot about for over a year. I mean it had not been hollowed out one bit. It should have cracked up sitting uncovered but had no checking or cracking in it. The wood was all but dry when I found it, so I thought it was worth trying to hollow out and see what the wood would look like finished. I have a very large poplar down on property owned by my family that I'll have to take a look at now.
