I've been refinishing some gun stocks lately and the manufacturers are using birch more often these days to keep costs down. This one I dyed with dark green rit dye mixed with DNA. I mixed the dye light so that I could get a more even color by spraying it twice. Since I finished it with Formsby's tung oil finish, I also mixed some of the powdered dye with a 50/50 mix of mineral spirits and the Formsby's. I gave it three coats of the thinned dye/finish mixture which helped to even out the color before I finished it with about ten coats of finish. There is some sapwood that didn't blend very well until I wiped on the colored finish.
