One line summary – I want a two-side small flap sander with interchangeable drums using a chuck - the key word is interchangeable! (I need it stationary not on a flex shaft as I need to use both hands to hold the piece.)

I need either a chuck that replaces the grinder wheel on a 5/8 coarse thread grinder shaft, or a motor with chuck combination. As an example, I want the “motor not included” motor on the Lee Valley site :

An example of the drums I want to change back and forth use is the Kirjes inflatable drums from Lee Valley (Part number 68Z50.61)

Now I did try adding these shaft/adapter chucks from Lee Valley to my grinder
http://www.leevalley.com/images/item/woodworking/sharpening/68k0501s1b.jpg

and even with much time and much adjustment the runout was so bad my grinder nearly vibrated off the bench.

The mandrel at Lee Valley
http://www.leevalley.com/images/item/woodworking/sharpening/68k0101s1a.jpg
only allows for a chuck on one side only and I need two sided. ( (http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=1&cat=1,43072,45939,41743&p=41743)www.seyco.com sells this as a kit)

Now the Grizzly http://grizzly.com/products/G8749 (http://grizzly.com/products/G8749) only takes proprietary drums with internal threads. The Sand Flee at http://www.rjrstudios.com (http://www.rjrstudios.com/) , the Foredom Bench Lathe and the motor at http://www.seyco.com (http://www.seyco.com/) all use the Lee Valley “adapter” approach – ergo runout!

Can anyone help me source a two sided, non runout, non proprietary drum thread, chucked sanding motor ?

Thanks
Malcolm

On a metal cutting lathe, it would be a simple task to turn a piece of 3/4 drill rod to 1/2" on each end. Cut a key way in the middle to hold drive pulley, with 3/4 bore. On each end, cut 1/2-20 threads for attaching a standard chuck. On the left side, you would probably want to add a jamb nut, or some RED Loctite. The rotation of the drum would tend to self unscrew the chuck. Add a couple of 1/2" pillow blocks. For the pillow blocks, look to "The Surplus Center. For the drill rod, I would use Enco (use-enco.com). The hardest part of the whole job would be machining the key way. The lathe will cut the threads.

Is there a left handed chuck? That would be great. The mandrel at LV has threads at both ends, but left and right. Same with the set screw type. Like Bruce said, a double ended shaft would be the way , but left and right threads.
I made one for my grinder, but no chucks.

I use an old motor and mount an air tool chuck to the shaft. This provides a 1/4" chuck only so I buy quarter inch diameter mandrels for my buffing and grinding wheels. I have two adapters that convert the motor shaft threads to the air chuck, they are very high precision adapters and I can't remember where I got them......20 years ago.

Air tool chucks are designed for 20,000 RPM.

Malcolm, I was almost sure I saw what you were describing somewhere, but darned if I can find exactly what you wanted.

I found the 1/3 HP grinder at http://www.caswellplating.com/buffs/buff_machine.htm and the Drill Chuck at http://www.wttool.com/product-exec/product_id/36789/nm/Multi_Craft_Economy_Chucks_Jacobs_Closeout_

Now I am not positive if the threads are the same but I think this is what your looking for...

Hope that helps.

Instead of threading the ends, you could cut a Jacobs taper on them. This would allow for the use of a chuck that isn't threaded on.

A Shopsmith drill chuck fits over a 5/8" shaft. The Shopsmith is also not threaded. Held on by a Set screw.
Not sure if that helps you at all.

The Craftsman 28949 lathe work arbor + chuck has 1/2x20 threads, which may not be big enough for you but it may work if you can come up with something to mount it on. It is a #2 Morse Taper arbor that comes with a chuck. I use mine in my lathe for stuff like that, but I don't really need a permanent setup. You can mount grinding wheels on the arbor with the proper size bushing as well as chuck up a flap wheel. I'm not sure where you could get a ccw rotating flap wheel for use in a chuck anyway, most flap wheels are directional.

Found this - dunno if a half horse is enough power or not....

Any comments on this one (and the half a horse?)
