I only ask becuase at the new house I have a med-large ash tree that has three good sized limbs off the main base trunk that is dead, has been for a few years. I am able to cut it down but was wondering if it is good for any turning? The limbs arnt thick enough to be cut into planks but are plenty thick for bowls and pen blanks..

Sorry for the crappy pic, only camera available had a dead bat...

As I understand, ash can be pretty hard, but it's good turning wood. Hubby just turned two baseball bats from ash and had a good time!!

Yep ash is good to turn. Hard wood but with sharp tools it is a joy. I like ash to dye and air brush.

Not to take over your post with my pics but I thought they would help. If you can get some 1/4 sawn blanks the grain is really cool like the first pic. Ash is super nice to turn and easy to sand.

LOL Ok then, I guess I will start making plans to take her down.

Anyone that wants to donate to my "I need a lathe again badly fund" and wants to buy some let me know... :) :) :)

Yep, ash is one of my favorites. Wish I had saved more of the tree I cut many years ago, before I knew how nice it could be.
