Epilog just posted a nice new marquetry project in their sample club.

This led me to a search of the Creek on the subject.....and it raised the question, where can I get different types of veneer? I've never worked with it and assume it's even thinner than "wood thins" or the wood we can get from George Perzel. Can it be purchased at Lowes/Home Depot?

Steve, Laserbits sells 8.5x11 sheets of it with adhesive backing they have a few different types of wood.

It might be good to get a sample pack from thnem to get you started.

LaserBits has laminate that is 1/8" and the wood thins are 0.005" and the Sample club material was 3/32"........any recommendations here?

The peel and stick veneers from Rockler work very nice too. They're great because you just cut out the shape, peel off the backing and stick them where you want them. Even around curves. You don't have to mess with glue. I now get mine from tapeease because they are local and have a good selection. If you look around, you probably have veneer places by you that sell the peel and stick stuff too.

I've worked a bit with the wood thins. They are thin! The thing I liked about them, I think I got a sample pack of 8 or 10 sheets for around $30 of a couple different woods.

I have done inlays and cutout using a mixture of acrylics and wood.

Last year I did a couple of Air Force wings for a project that I cut the outline out of black acrylic and the inlay out of Alder sheets. Came out nice.

They lay pretty flat so they are easy to work with. They already have an adhesive laminated to them. I haven't done much inlay work these are used basically (like most of my work) for decreative uses. I probaly wouldn't use it on a table top!

I always keep a handful of things like this around for special jobs at the last minute. Makes me look prepared!:D

Rockler and Wood Craft I believe sell "thicker veneers for more durable applications.

They also have cool veneer inlay strips already with inlay geometric patterns which work well as a "framing" border. Reasonably price too.

If you have a Woodcraft or Rockler nearby it's worth a trip to see all the neat stuff!

Beware though!!! These shops can get you thinking about too many other neat ideas!:p

Hi Guys (and Gals);
There are always some incredible buys on wood veneers on Ebay-great prices and quality from reputable suppliers. I do not own Ebay I wish) nor have any relationship with them other than as an infrequent seller and long time buyer, etc, etc.
By the way, the wood thins I sell are 5/32" thick whreas veneer is typically 1/28" to 1/42" thick.

Man o Man Steve, I can't believe you are actually asking this ?:rolleyes:
If you just google "wood Veneer sheets", you will find a bunch.
I am sure the one that Jeanette mentioned is probably a good one but the others are way too expensive. IMHO

There are also things to consider like what kind of backing you will use and how you plan on gluing it together. Here are a few of the ones I found and you can ask some of these:

Look at this one to see some of the different backings available:

This should keep you busy for a while.:D

I search and buy our materials kind a like how I travel
I try to stay away from the tourist traps and look for "off the beaten track" deals from the locals. For this example Locals means Manufacturers and Wholesalers. But if you only need few then any of the retail outlets will do. Just looking at the big picture for you Steve.

Hope it helps.

Wow! Thanks Mike!!! That will keep me busy for awhile!

So one question for you inlay/marquetry people that hasn't been answered is which thickness should I use?

For the Sample Club project as an example, will the 1/8" material just give me more of a 3D look? Would it look almost the same if I used 1/32" vaneer with adhesive backing? Is there a time or situation when you would use one thickness over another?

Thanks!

Hi Steve;
You are not going to find much (variety) 1/8" veneer out there-most is 1/28 to 1/42 thick (and getting thinner every year). Personally I would stay away from the adhesive backed veneer if you're going to do marquetry type stuff.
For marquetry, the thicker veneers work better along with a non-waterbased glue. I use fish glue frequently for inlays as it has a nice tack and is easy to work with.
Don't mess with contact adhesive at all and not with spray adhesives unless you are doing a large surface and can lay it down fast and apply pressure.
If this is a one time project or you are just experimenting, send me a PM with your address and I'll mail you a pack of veneer samples to play with.
Best regards;
