Hi Chaps,

Does anyone have a wooden box template that I could use as is or change to fit.

I'm looking to make some small plywood boxes on the CNC or laser with the castellation edges???? that fix together

I hope some one can help

Cheers

Hi Nolan,

I know somewhere on here someone posted a link to a small program that lets you create those boxes of various dimensions. You enter the dimensions and it gives you the "drawing" of the parts. I'm sure someone will probably post the link. I'll have to dig thru my files/programs to see if I can find it.

Hi Tim!
Yeah...I've been busy with work, laser engraving, and various other projects. I was on vacation last week and had a blast helping my Dad out on his farm. I got to run his Bobcat quite a bit. Man! Those things are so much fun to run! I highly recommend it to everyone if they ever get a chance to run one...very addicting. lol

What a great little program. Thank you for looking it up and posting it. I know it will save me and many others a great deal of time.

There have been several posts with ready-made files for boxes but I'm having trouble locating them.

Here's one for a small box with a lift up lid I picked up somewhere, may have been on SMC but can't remember.
It's set for 3.6mm ply but can be scaled down for 1/8".

It would be nice if anyone knew how to produce a Java applet like the one above for this one. It's beyond me I'm afraid.

Does anyone have this bov readily available for 1/8" material?

I believe the box was originally posted on Epilog's Sample club for 1/4" material.

Here you go Steve. Did this for acrylic last year.

Thanks Tim!!!! The last time I tried to conver one of these boxes, the joints were the correct size, but they didn't line up correctly! Wasted a ton of acrylic and I don't ever think I got it right!!!!

Next time use cardboard to test spacing... cheaper (and for the greenies in the audience, recyclable).

Nice box...I like this --- Was trying to figure out how to do "feet" where they were in the shape but not really noticed as 'feet'.

Cutting one now to show friend...Didnt even remove your info...But will next time...
Thank you...

I can't take credit for any of those boxes. Other than resizing to 1/8. I did mutate these boxes into my own designs. Fancier feet and much more precice joints. Since this pic I also changed the shape of the top. They're good sellers.

Hey Tim,

I don't mean to complain, especially when someone gives me something for free......but I opened your file this morning, and the box is like 1.5"x1.5"......slightly smaller than I was looking for. Any idea how I can re-size it to fit things other than one ring?

Thanks!

I've got box designs in a lot of sizes. I'll find something for you when I get home this evening, although it may be a bit fancier then those above. Did you have a size in mind?

Not really......anything that can hold a bracelet would be fine!!! LOL!!!!!!

I used the mentioned boxmaker program to make these for my granddaughter last fall. She loved them.

Hmmmm.......maybe it's me......but when I open these files the box is only 2" wide.....am I doing something wrong?

Don't know... Dave posted it in metric sizes and I saved it in inches... I think.

And here is a slightly wider box for 1/8" material.

Tim Bateson
09-24-2009, 5:42 PM
Here is one similar in size to the one Skip posted. You'll notice an extra rectangle cut out. Using 1/8 ply, the box felt to flimsy, so I glue that inside to the bottom to add strength.

I've sold a lot of these at the couple shows that I've done. They're my 2nd biggest sales behind crosses. Some boxes are engraved others use fretworks, some a combination.

Oops - The posted box doesn't even fit together. :o Thanks to one of our members PMing me. I really need to do some house cleaning on old .cdr files.
This one should be good. The only change is the bottom piece. I swapped it out for the proper one. Note: The front and back do not match. I lowered the height of the back piece to provide ample clearance for the lid to open & close.

Skip

That design seems to be for .250 material, at least that is what I measure the slots as.

Pete, maybe the slots are 1/4" wide but only 1/8" deep for 1/8" material? Cut one, it should go together.

If it doesn't work, let me know please. It might be a file that Tim sent me...:)

Skip is correct. The depth is 1/8 or more accurately from 1/8 to 17/128.

Really? 17/128 is .132" All of the depths were supposed to be .120"

Tim Bateson

Yes - Wood is seldom the exact thickness. So I prefer to sand any overlap flush rather than occasionally being short. As I work these projects, I've been slightly increasing this depth behond 1/8 to compensate for the variable thickness.

It doesn't help with the "artistic" part of the job, but there's this oldie-but-goodie for generating the raw box:

http://www.shaddysengraving.com/laser/HTML/fingerbox.html

For oddball stuff, I use the 'democube' option (it's the only one that puts joints on all twelve edges). Then do a 'break curves apart' to get edge components of whatever size that fit tightly together.
