I am in the process of searching for a material that can be injection molded, and then turned. The final product will need to be very rigid, and have the ability to be turned to a glass-like finish. I know a lot of people turn composites of various types (Corian, etc) - I think a lot of pen turners do this. Does anyone have any advice about materials that can be mixed and poured/injected into a mould, and then turned once dry? I would like for the product to be available in a variety of colors as well.

Thanks,
Ben

here is what i use. http://store.creative-wholesale.com/Home/tabid/118/CategoryID/309/List/1/Level/1/ProductID/1289/Default.aspx?SortField=Free3+DESC%2cProductName it works very well. when you are done sanding it it looks scuffed up, but all you need to do is either buff it, or put some finish of your choise on it. it turns real smooth. i use waterlox on it and it looks really nice.

Take a look at this company, they have acrylic resins and mixing material. I buy cast rod from them for pens, bottle stoppers and yo yo's.

Alumilite Crystal Clear is a 2-part 1:1 mix ratio, high-gloss urethane resin designed for pen making and mold making. Low odor, 4-5 minutes working time, 60 minute demold time.

Silmar41 polyester resin (PR) is a 2-part 10 drops/ounce mix ratio resin. Stinks to high heaven until finished. Gives you as much time as you need to work it (based on how many drops of activator you add) and demolds in several hours to overnight.

Just for reference, my wife has a "sensitive nose" and the smell of PR drives her nuts. Even when I'm out in the back yard through 3 doors from where she is. Either casting it or turning it. Alumilite, on the other hand, I can cast it sitting at the kitchen table.
