I have had an old Craftsman lathe for a long time and only had 4 Craftsman carbide tipped chisels. These were ok until I tried sharpening them. What a chore. I always wanted some older HSS chisels and yesterday I got some at a sale for $25. They are Buck Brothers and they seem to be pretty old. Now I just need to sharpen them up and start turning something. :)
Pic is over in Neanderthal Haven under pawnshop shavers.

what was wrong with the carbide chisels?
it looks like you got a good set of chisels to start with. now you just need a bowl gouge

I only had four carbide chisels. I don't like trying to sharpen them either. I have a low speed water wheel and it doesn't do much for them. I like the assortment of the "new" set much better and they are heftier than the Craftsmans.

For sharpening the carbide tools, you should get one of the green bench grinder wheels designed for carbide.
