I have read with interest the different kinds of plumbing being used on dust collection. It appeared to me the SD pipe was the cheapest to use.

So............ today I headed off to probably the largest suppliers of any kind of pipe you could want in the area(Knoxville, TN). I took in a list of sizes I needed(8,6 and 4) and asked for prices on pipe and fittings. Believing SD was much cheaper than schedule 40, I ended up with sticker shock!:eek:

The pipes seemed reasonable ( 8" 14' 6.30)but the fittings, .........WOW!

Examples

Wye: 8" - 95.39 6" - 32.03

Elbow(90) 8" - 56.30 6" - 18.73

Coupling 8" - 36.86 6" - 21.70

This pipe is the green pipe and the fittings are white. It has the rubber seal built in.

Am I looking at the right stuff??

Thanks,
Jim

No, no, the rubber seal stuff is way expensive as you found out.

You want bell end pipe and plain hub fittings. Prices from my local Lowes:

6x6x6 wye 21.67
6x6x4 wye 21.67
6" coupling 4.67
6" 90 deg elbow 9.47
6" 45 deg elbow 6.97
6" 22.5 deg elbow 11.37
6" cap 4.67

BTW, it's hard to imagine that you really need to be using any 8" stuff. Now *that* can get ridiculous.

Better be the wrong stuff at those prices.

6" pipe around here goes about 2.00 a foot. I think I paid 1.86 for the first 2 pieces, and the guy remembered me and my stereo system in my van, and let me have the next 3 at about 1.11/ft. McMaster Carr for the 45 els, and 6/6/6 wyes. Lowes for the 6/6/4 wyes and 22.5 els. The rubber gasketed fittings are fine if you can get a good price on them, but otherwise at normal price, they are a lot more expensive.
How far is Norcross GA from you? There is a Horizon supply there. The prices I've heard from people who have purchased the S&D from them are very reasonable. They are just off of I-85.
And the S&D 2729 is white. What you have seen that is green is the SDR35 (I think I have that right). Uses the same fittings, but the pipe is thicker walled. The wall thickness on the 2729 is 1/10". Ask for gravity fed sewer and drain pipe. Jim.

Jim,

I'm about three hours from Norcross.

Thanks,
Jim

Cliff - It's 8" coming out of the cyclone.

Ask for DWV pipe. That will be the 6" white PVC pipe similar to Sched 40 in size and weight.

The S&D I bought from Menards was green and the fittings were white. I remember buying 1 more 6" wye last year and it was $14.95. I believe the number on it was 2729. Menards was much cheaper than Lowes or a local plumbing supply house.

Be careful when picking out fittings. The sewer pipe is a slightly different size from the Sch. 40 pipe.

4 inch sewer pipe is cheap. The price really goes up with 6 inch and up.
