I haven't had much of a chance to turn lately. I finally dusted off the lathe and cleared away the cobwebs this weekend. These are some segmented ornaments, all about 6" x 2", hollowed, finished with DO and then Deft gloss lacquer.

l to r Canarywood & purple heart, Canarywood & walnut, Purpleheart & canarywood, Walnut & maple.

Beautiful indeed. No need to set up the captured hollowing rig.

Curt,
The form and proportion on all of them is spot-on. Great work. I really like the contrast of colors. Very Well done.

Curt,
I really like these and the constrast your segments create.
On the second one (canary and walnut) the canary wood appears to curve out between the walnut pieces in the body of the ornament. Is this correct, or is it an optical illusion? Bob V.

Hmmm, I guess it is that time of year to get started on ornaments. These are really nice. Thanks for the kick in then pants!

Those are really nice. What would be a good reference book to see what I need to do to get started? If I get started now should have one done by the time the Christmas tree goes up.

I really like those. Nice caps and finials. I tried unsuccessfully to find any instructions on the web like a tutorial for segmented ornaments. I am struggling with trying to make a couple. Anyone aware of an on-line tutorial?

Thanks everyone!

Steve and Mike, here's a link to a crude tutorial that I put together last year.

Curt those are really beautiful! I noticed in your tutorial that you used some home made cones on a pen mandrel to shape the center ball. Any idea where someone might get something similar to your cones? Does anyone sell something like this Thanks for your tutorial and again great job!
