My stepdaughter has been complaining about not having a desk since she went back to school. Since I couldn't stand the thought of spending $40.00 on a couple of peices of mdf from Wal-Mart and I had the lumber on hand this is what I came up with. Started it the Thursday before Labor day and is was complete the following Thursday. The finish is SW golden oak stain topped with lacquer. This was the first project I have sprayed with lacquer - LOVE IT. Doubt I'll be using wipe on poly again.

If you read Wood Mag you may see some similarities in the design. I didn't like the way they did the sides so I used raised panels there instead of what they did. Also since I was under a time crunch most of the joinery was done with pocket screws.
Thanks for looking
Greg

Gorgeous Greg. I'm sure your stepdaughter is thrilled and will have it for many years to come. This is certainly not in the same class as anything you could find at Walmart - in fact shouldn't even be in the same sentence as Walmart!

I can't believe you could knock together something so nice in such a short time! I feel like a real klutz hanging around the Creek.

Very very nice Greg. She doesn't have an excuse for not studying now. Although maybe she will say that she can't use the desk without a chair. HMMM...

Beats the heck out of anything at Wallyworld. Besides where else can you find a project with fine craftsmanship and Dad's love? Sure to be an heirloom in the family.

give some construction details. Inquiring minds need to know: What type of joinery did you use at the corners? Thanks Alan

Alan,
As far as construction details - most ok all of the joints are done with pocket screws. Since I was under such a time constraint I couldn't use m/t joinery like I would have preferred but it worked out ok. About the only thing that is glue only is the rail and stiles that house the raised panels. You can also refer to Wood Magazine that's where I got the idea.

Great and FAST work!! I agree on the raised panels. That's how I'm adjusting my current project!! Great job!!

The raised panel sides make the design.
