Here's my latest attempt at thimbles. From left to right, cocobolo, myrtle, big leaf maple (a little embellishment on the top of this one). Antique oil on the myrtle and maple. 2 wheel buffed, and waxed with Renaissance - my first use of that product. I like it. Comments always welcome. Mike

Mike,
Gorgeous thimbles.
In the past, I've turned a fair amount of thimbles (remain still many rough shape in a box)
It's a way to collect various woods. And afther turning in one wood, you can embelish with a different rim (another wood, bone or so) you can as well to add a very litle rim between two part of the same wood...
and there is other ways I don' know...

Brent, you need (in my case) a special cutter to hollow the inside of the thimble - i imagine some people can hollow it out freehand - and shape the outside. after that, you need a shop made jamb chuck to push the thimble onto, and finish turning/sanding. Pretty easy; I find the hard part making the jamb chuck, and getting the thimble to stay on . Thanks for the comments, Mike

a special cutter was mentioned? heres a trick i picked up from Ben, you use a nail, heat treat it, then sharpen it. use it as your tool, holding it with a pair of vise grips.

Thanks Mike (and Curtis) for the info. I was wondering how you hollow out something that small.

Mike:

You mentioned using a special cutter to hollow the inside. Is this what you use?
