After re-reading all of the posts in the 2 threads on roofing, I realized there's a point none of us made. A couple of years ago there was a change in the BOCA code regarding the nailing schedule for roofs. If your local code requires it, the new "hurricane" nailing schedule is 6 nails per shingle instead of 4. I know that the sound of a roof going down was always a classic "Bang ... bang-bang-bang" of a nail gun securing the shingle and then shooting the other 3 nails. In Connecticut, we needed to adhere to that 6 nail/shingle code.
It's worth checking with your local inspector. I know that a number of the local guys that do roofs didn't know about the change.
