Here is a vase I got off the other side of the tree from the curly maple vase I posted last week. It doesn't have any curl to speak of, but still has some nice stuff going on in it. It is 12" high by around 9" in dia. finished with deft. The photo is one of the first I've taken in my new photo tent I just got. The tent is 36" x 36" and should work well when I figure out where to place the lights.
Thanks,
Jack

Great looking vase, there's a lot going on in that piece of wood. Beautiful form and finish. Looks like the photo tent is working out well. What are you using for a backdrop?

Great looking vase Jack! Beautiful wood!

Photos can be a lot more challenging than turning! You already know that lighting is hard to adjust so that you illuminate the subject without adding all sorts of glare spots. Just experiment a little and you will find a happy medium. Also, remember that shadows can be your friend as they help to create a 3D effect by offering a sense of depth.

Nice work - both the turning and the photo!

Walt - this is just one of the vendors that carry this finish: http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/2004174/8791/DEFT-Clear-Wood-Finish--Gloss--Quart.aspx

um...
Ok, so Deft is a brand of lacquer available in spray can or brush on, in
a few different gloss options.
Thanks, I get it now,
W

ps I have never seen Deft brand anything in Canada

Thanks everyone. Here is the tent I just got. My old tent was just two small. I use two clamp type lights I got at lowes. I put day lite light bulbs in them. The second site is where I bought the day lite bulbs. The tent comes with 4 back drops to use.
Walt,
I like the satin spray for my finial coat of finish. It doesn't run as bad and I can buff it to the gloss I want. I use a brush for the first few coats to fill the wood and then sand well before spraying any finish.
