I used to have a formula written down that would let you reverse calculate sales tax on a given amount. For instance, you sell an item for $23.00 and you want that to be sales tax included (6% in PA).

The formula would figure out what to write on the receipt for the cost of the item, and the sales tax, to equal $23.00 total.

I know it's simple math but I'm not smart enough to figure it out and I can't find the paper I had it written on. Can someone help?

Thank you

Divide by 1.06.

To give the details:

Let x be the amount you have to sell for to come out with a final sale price of $23, and let the tax amount be 6%

x + .06x = 23

1.06x = 23

x = 23/1.06
