Here are a few of my latest creations with the first one being hard naple and bloodwood. The 2nd one being hard maple and blackwood and the third being a set of pepper and salt or for you sailors out there- Port and Starboard. Critiques, comments, etc welcomed...

NICE!

Okay how did you cut the blanks for the first 2?

Growing trees that way takes too darn long, so I used a 2x2x18 stick of hard maple and glued up 1/2 x 3 x 18 boards of the exterior wood. I then cut off the excess of the 1/2 boards and kept them for inside-out Christmas ornaments

I recently tried making my first grinders - wound up drilling badly, and ruining the two mechanisms I got from CS. I'll just have to try again. Very nice mills you have there - the lamination lends itself well to this kind of project. mike

I really like the maple laminated ones and the celtic knot. The barber pole not so much, but that's personal and I know others will love it. I have done one knot set (grinder and shaker) and intend to do more, they can be very tricky keeping all of the cuts lined up close enough. Good job!

Yes lining up the cuts is critical. I made a jig out of melamine faced shelving boards from Menards. That plus lots of clamps keeps them in line.

George - nice work on all the mills! Really like the color combination and design of the Blackwood & Maple mill! Looking forward to seeing what you turn next!

Grrrrreat!
What did you use for the Port & Starboard Set, and how did you color them?
Thanks
Terry

Terry,
I used white ash for the wood and sanded to 240. Then I dipped the green in Rit dye and the Red in Tulip dye. Got the idea for Rit dye from Steve Stumpf and his green bowl on an earlier thread.

How, may I ask, did you ruin 2 mechanisms? Were these CrushGrinds or Chef Specialties?
