I believe this is Myrtlewood. I did a better job with the spalting on this piece.

definitely a unique piece, never really see the ripple effect on the top, looks good though, nicely done.

That is a great form I liked it the moment I saw it. Reminds me of a ripple in a pond. The curl offsets the spalt nicely. The only thing that I might have considered changing if I had turned this would be to use a dark base thinking blackwood or ebonized walnut.

Well done...interesting form. Might be myrtlewood but it looks more like BL maple to me.

Really like the shape and different top. I find it hard to believe that you could get the wall down to 1/8" through that small and opening (looks like about 5/8 to 3/4"). That must have taken some patience and nerve. I am starting to do some hollow forms and am having trouble being consistent, and going through the wall is such a disapointment after thinking things are going so well and just need one more pass. It looks like the wood worked well. Very nice.

I agree with Wally. Interesting form, but the wood does look like Big Leaf Maple. Myrtle will have a very distinct smell. Most of the time, kind of sweet and spicy, like a bay leaf. If it is starting to go sour, it can smell like a horse stall. Myrtle is actually California Bay Laurel, and not a myrtle at all, or even related to them. Must be Marketing like Jatoba/Brazillian Cherry.

I have to agree with Wally and Reed on the wood type. I have not seen and Myrtle with that degree of flame and the color is a little to creamy. Like Reed says it has a very distinct smell, I have some on the bench that I need to core from a burl and every time I walk by it you can smell it. No matter it is a very well turned piece and the shape is great! The spalting and flame work well with it all.

Great job,

Jeff

Maple it is. One of the fella's in our turning club got a big shipment of wood from a west coast supplier. He thought the chunks I grabbed were myrtle. I wouldn't know Mrytle from Martha! I thought that when I turned it that it looked an awful lot like maple. And it did not have any of the aroma described.

Thanks to all for the comments and input.

Mark,
I really like the design. It sets off the Myrtle-wood and is very elegant looking. Great tool control and great lines. The top adds so much to the piece. I'll bet that right angle corner was a challenge to hollow. Very well done!
