This Saturday my son and I are going to Brazil for two and a half weeks:D. I am hoping to find some interesting wood and bring back a few blanks for pens or other small items. Any suggestions on what to look for? We will be on the coast in Rio for a couple of days and then also in the interior state of Minas Gerais. Looking forward to a fun time.

If at all possible you should try to get to Manaus in Amazonas State of Brazil. That is where you would be able to get into the jungle and find some wonderful wood.. If you get to the jungle go to where they are cutting firewood and you are in a tropical wood wonderland / superstore.

Just looking at the end cuts will be an education and make you want to stay. You will enjoy Brazil and the Brazilian people. They say there will never be a problem in Brazil if there is electricity. With electricity they have cold beer " Antarctica" and music to dance by, with that a Brazilian is always happy. I dont know how old your son is but you should have a rope on him as those Brazilian girls are something else.

If I could be born again I would be Brazilian. Minas Gerais is an internationally recognized location for MANY kinds of semi precious gemstones. Tourmaline of many colors including watermelon, amethest and a lot more. And cheap as the mines are located there.

Make sure you go to the one of the beaches near Rio. There is not any wood there, but you will enjoy the view...:D

Obrigado!

You won't find much wood around Rio but Ipanema beach is a must see but like Jim said, keep a line on your son. Cocacabana beach is not really safe for tourists. Then there's Sugarloaf Mountain, the Statue of the Christ and lots of local scenery. In the mornings, it seems like everyone in the city is out jogging. ;)

Traffic in downtown Rio is a nightmare. Those buses DO NOT stop for pedestrians! :)

What a great vacation!

But I suspect our Govt folks will have something to say about bringing wood across our borders. They may want some evidence that your blanks have been treated for bugs.

My wife is from Rio - she has many friends down there and last time she was there, brought me a piece of "Jacaranda" from a knife maker in Tieredents, MG.

If you want, give me a call before you go. Send a PM if you want with your number. I have many, many contacts down there and could probably even set you up with a friend as an escort. Rio can be quite dangerous.

Probably sent this too late.....
