Recently picked up a Starrett combo square. Its a 4 piece set, but the model is something I cant find any info about.

Its a 433-12-4R. I can find plenty of info on the 434-12-4R, but not the 433. The square seems to look the same as the 434 (satin chrome, forged, etc) but I cant find any concrete info.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Go to http://www.starrett.com/download/285_p299_308s.pdf. This is everything you could want to know about Starrett squares from the horses mouth, so to speak. The 33 series, 34 series and many others are detailed in this PDF.

Hello,
I believe the 434 has the reversible protractor head & the 433 doesn't.
Other than that, it's the same.

Hang on - let me check...
Yep. That's what it is.

Here's a link to what's probably an old catalog:
http://www.basstool.com/catalog/850.pdf
It lists both the 433 and the 434.

Thanks! Thats what I was looking for, an old catalog.

Their current catalog only shows the 434.

I still cant grasp what it means for the protractor to be "reversible", but that seems to be the only difference.

It also looks like the 433 never came with a satin finish on the blade ? I might see if I can upgrade that.

I got the whole 433 set NIB for $89.00 shipped, so I think I did pretty well :)

4r means,in ruler parlance, that the rule is graduated in 1/32,1/16,1/8,1/4,and 1/2". That might be what their number refers to.

Hello Chris,

I believe if you look at the pictures in the link to the old catalog, you'll see one protractor is shown on one side of the blade, and one is shown on the other.
The non-reversibile can only go on the side of the blade shown in the picture, while the reversible can go on either.

I guess it's a nice touch on the 434, but I opted to go the more simple Starret w/out the protractor & went with a digital protractor, a Starrett Jobsite protractor & one of the borg plastic (~$5.00) protractors instead.

$89.00 is a very good price. Gloat-worthy in fact.
New, they go/went for over $200. Something like $225.00 for the cast.

Enjoy it!
They (Starrett) sure are sweet!
