Norm is building the upholstered cigar chair. Since NYW is in the 2nd rotation of this year's shows I was wondering if anyone out there has attempted this or other upholstered projects.

The framework of the chair doesn't seem too difficult- it would only take me about 4 months to complete- but the upholstery seems like a whole new critter.

I considering ordering the "measured drawing" in case I get brave in the future- anyone else considering jumping into it?

You're on the second go-round? My local PBS stations haven't finished the first one yet - In fact, the second episode of the two-part Cigar Chair is the newest one we've gotten. KCET & KOCE have both been having maybe two or three weeks of shows, then three or four weeks of pledging. (We're currently on our fourth consecutive week, and only had a three week break between pledge sessions this time.)

KCET (barely) finished the TOH series before this break, but Norm still has several more shows to go, I think...

Second rotation!?!?! What kinda PBS you runnin' there? Our local station hasn't showed the NYW for weeks and, if I recall correctly, hasn't even got to the second episode of the cigar chair yet. If they did, they snuck it in because I was trying catch that one. Thay have shown the same rerun of some blonde lady trying to tell me what to do with my money about 10 times every weekend.

I saw the 2nd part of this project several months ago. I don't get to see it all the time so I can't recall all the others this season (HGTV overload). I guess we'll have to contact Rod for additional NYW help.

I thought our PBS affiliate was bad about the donor-rama but evidently we're in better shape than some.

I think you're mistaking, Mark. I get NYW from the PBS national feed on DishNetwork. According to PBS, the national feed broadcasts are on the date that the programs are released to the affiliates. The cigar chair episodes aired 1 February and 8 February, respectively.

Unless you have some sort of special arrangement with Russell Morash, I can't imagine that you really saw what you think you saw. In fact, since RM produces the shows in the fall (you can tell from the exterior shots at the beginning of each program) I don't believe the cigar chair pair was even "in the can" several months ago.

Saturday's episode was a painted corner hutch, for those keeping score. Jim Shaver asked on WC how far behind he was now that Buffalo's begathon is over. Jim, I think about eight weeks, according to the episode guide on my website.

Hey guys, take it easy on Mark, after that long PBS fund raiser black-out it may seem like we're on the second showing! ;)

I would like to build that cigar chair but I think it be a while, looking to move into a new house soon, well new used house, hopefuly after April, and we will be on that for a while.

And of corse setting up the new shop! :)

Why would you want to watch old weekly New Yankee Workshop episodes when you can watch the new daily Old Rebel Workshop episodes on Saw Mill Creek.<p align="center">

Our PBS stations here in the Waah DC area (we have two of them) are so irregular with Norm's schedule that I quit trying to watch. One week he's on at 10:30 am. The next week it in the afternoon. Last week they had opera all afternoon. Then it seems like they are always running fund raisers. I quit looking forward to seeing his program. If I catch one I'll just feel lucky.

Rod, it had been so long since I had seen NYW because of my schedule and PBS fundraisers, it really did seem like months since I saw the second show in the cigar chair series. I guess it was February 8. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

No I don't have a buddy-buddy deal with Russell Morash but I did see the first part of the series this past Saturday March 24- Norm's in NC where they build 90% of the furniture sold in the US; in the town square, some kids in the 1920's shot a Civil War era cannon in the prerequisite town square into the local drug store; blah, blah, blah

Perhaps our affiliates (we have 2) are so far behind they ran the 2nd one first!

Actually- I was just wondering if others would be attempting this project. Sorry to disrupt the NYW universe. :( :D

Mark, I watched and taped this double-episode as I've been waiting for such a project to come along for a long time. The plan is also here and when I have the opportunity to dive in, I plan on making two of them for our great room.

I always believed that most of us are capable of this kind of project and any other off-shoots we might dream up--seeing how it is done on NYW was a good reinforcer. There is very little in print about frame construction for upholstered furniture. John Kelsey at Cambium Books was able to point me to one book that had a few illustrations, but generally they all deal with the covering and not the foundation!

In case you are interested, the hardware kit from Lee is $80 and the hide is $300...per chair.

Jim- I thought the cost of the leather would be relatively high but for a fine piece of leather furniture that would easily go for 3x that retail, it might be worth it.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Lee Valley kit. Make sure we see pics (especially progress shots) of your version!

Mark

PS- really like your website! Lots of good info and ideas. It's too bad you don't like Jet! :D

The kit is from Lee Industries, the place that Norm visited in the two episodes and got the "cigar chair" design from. You can see the original chair at http://www.leeindustries.com/leather.html in the top row. The email address on the NYW plan is not good...you'll need to call Lee directly to order the kit and hide.

You are correct about the price of the hide...good quality leather chairs are not inexpensive, even if they have "dubious" origins! These are quite nice, IMHO. (Although I think that the Pottery Barn "Manhattan Chair" is sexier for some reason...)

Thank you for your kind comments on my site...I wish I had more time these days to put up more information, but the Prize Patrol didn't show up on Valentines Day with a big check. :D

Lynn's Unwritten (until now) Rule - if you program your VCR to tape a show, it WILL be moved.

More likely, it will be preempted by fund raising or a war...
