Walnut from Modesto!

Some of you might recall Mark Rios selling off pretty much all of his woodworking stuff and this included some cool walnut he got from a downed tree near his property in Modesto, CA.

Most of it are shorts but there some very pretty figure and color in quite a bit of the tree.

I also hauled away some large chunks that I will resaw up later on and dry but it'll be a bit before I get to those pieces.

A lot of this is the root ball and so there is some interesting stuff.

Interspersed within the walnut are some maple planks (10/4, 10' long, 8-12" widths). I didn't do a 100% proper stickering process as I ran out of sticker type material and time quite frankly. Nothing is sealed whatsoever and I doubt I'll do it since it is mostly shorts. We'll see what comes of it.

Should be fun when I get to slicing up those trunks.... :D

There is a fairly square-block of walnut on top the stack there near the shed window...I'm bringing that to the CSBBQ!! :D Maybe Ken can turn me a goblet or something!! :D

I was out on Hwy 132 heading to Modesto on Friday and passed an orchard being rooted. Must've been 30 acres of mature Walnut. Sigh!

Nope...he used his Griz BS and then the large chunks it was a chainsaw and when that wouldn't start, it was a bigfoot 10" circular saw coupled with a Makita sawzall!! :eek:

I should be able to muscle those chunks through my MM20.

I must've been blind because 132 is what I took coming back from Modesto. My truck couldv'e taken on a bit more walnut! :D Perhaps we should go visit this walnut orchard?? :D

Hey Chris,
Why not take a couple of those chunks and cut them up into pen blanks and bring them with you to the BBQ to donate to the FPP? I am bringing about 200 walnut and cherry blanks. The more the merrier.

That is the size I mostly made. I also made a few that were 7/8" square. I think 6" length is pretty standard. But I had a couple that were only 5 - 5 1/2 that I think are acceptable.

I'm looking forward to resawing those trunks on the MM20 but it'll be a bit before I get around to it. I think there will be some awesome figure in them. As always, I'll keep the forum informed when the time arrives! :D
