Rockler sells a couple of different sizes of these. I like them built into the hinges this way as it doesn't require any additional hardware.

John

Jack - I've used hinges similar to these on several blanket chests with fairly heavy (oak) lids. They work quite well and are adjustable.

Have fun with your project.

I used some of the torsion hinges from Rockler on a blanket chest and really liked them. Not slow closing - they hold the lid up.

After having bought a couple sets from Rockler, I found them in the local Woodcraft store. The "old" solution was to buy the supports separate from the hinges - cheaper but not as elegant.

The big part is calculating the load (it will be a scary high number). Take the weight of the lid and multiply by the distance from the center of the lid to the pivot point of the hinges. Then buy the combination of hinges (or supports) that meet that requirement... for example, if you need 150 inch pounds, get two 60s and one 30.

You can find them in just about any hardware store but they are usually the light duty. I find that nearly all lids I build need something to support more weight. I get them from Rockler, which sells center, right and left mount supports in three different weight ratings. If you want to take a look at them, the link is

I hang the lids with hinges and put the lid supports on afterward.

I used these on a desk lid I made over 8 years ago and they are still working. http://www.home.earthlink.net/~us71na/emilydesk.jpg They would hold the lid in any position so you actually had to push the lid closed.

Lowes carries these (not HD suprisingly). I think they are $4 each. I just used 5 of them for a solid oak lid 20" x 36". If you let go of the lid it just stays where you left it.
