I am making a surfboard platform (step) for my wife's classroom and could use a bit of advice.

The surfboard will be made from Red Oak, 8/4 12"wide x 6' long.

I need suggestions on how best to attach legs to the surfboard. I do not have a good method to cut mortise in the surfboard.

Thanks for the help.

You could do it like a very short table. Connect the legs to each other with boards which are four inches tall or so. The boards are at the tops of the legs. Use mortise and tenon joinery. That structure is stable and solid by itself. Then plunk the top on it -- your plank of 8/4 oak. Use figure-8 clips to hold it on.
