This hollow form is from a blank I actually paid for. First one, finally worked up the courage to cut into it. I am calling it "Rookie" can you figure out why? Doh!!

Mark,
Nice job. This Hollow Form shows you have a grasp of both form and tool control. I like the color and the finish looks really great. Very well done.

Thanks for all the looks and compliments. Well the reason I am calling this form "Rookie" is because of the rookie job I did reading the blank. The top should be the bottom and the bottom should be the top. All the interesting spalting is on the bottom. :o I think the piece would have been more interesting with the spalting on the top.

As far as the finish. Couple quick coats of BLO. Let it dry 24 hours.
Several coats of rattle can lacquer. Let it dry around 24 hours.
Level it with steel wool. Tripoli buff. Level it with steel wool again. Hand buff with horsehair brush. Buff with wax.

For a "Rookie" it looks pretty darn good! The finish is perfect for the wood as it lets the beauty of it shine through and the shape is simple and nice! I know what you mean about buying wood and the fear that goes with starting to turn it, I have a few nice pieces that still have me scared!

Thanks for the update and it only gets easier as you go along!
