Well I finally got to take a hat course with Johannes Michelsen this past weekend. We all had a fantastic time and I highly recommend it to anyone. There were 4 of us in the class and everyone went home with their own hat. I took home some blanks and I'm going to make a couple of more. (Of course LOML has to have one. She's from texas)

Great Hat!! How do you like the grind he uses on his bowl gouge? He seams like a good instructor. Good job with your hat! G

Dave, The turned hat is awesome! I have seen these and have always wanted to do one too! Just another thing on the long list of turnings to attempt before I die! You did great for the short time of instruction, he must be a great teacher!

Thanks for sharing,

Jeff

Thanks all.

Hannes is a great guy. He will work with you as much or as little as you need. He teaches the proper way to use the tools and proper sharpening technique. He will show you some tricks to deal with thin end grain to avoid cracking. And also show you how to make some tools to help in turning and bending the hats. All the hats are custom fit. Mine fits perfectly. Hannes also has a video on making hats, which I highly recommend. I also got to make a mini hat.

That is too cool! I love the bob-war hat band, too. :)

The ability to make hats is the primary reason I want to upgrade my lathe to a larger one. Thanks for sharing.

That's a good lookin' hat.
And Johannes seems like a great guy. I met him at the last IWF, and wished I could take a class. Sounds like y'all had a lot of fun.

Congrats!
