Creekers, my nephew enrolled in a woodworking school after high school. His final project was this roll top desk. He did it all himself - the raised panels, edged the writing surface, dove tailed drawers and a router cut tambour roll top. Comes apart in manageable sections and best yet -it fits back together. He wasn't able to get it finished so Uncle Bill pitched in with some stain and shellac.

What do you think? Did the young man do okay?

Looks nice. But if your nephew doesn't learn that woodworking is about the journey to a destination that he can't get to, then it really doesn't matter. Everything I have ever built I have in my house. Blemishes and all. Proud of every piece. Each mistake was valuable.

I think he did a great job. Uncle Bill did OK, too, but he had a very nice foundation to work from.

It looks like he did well in class and learned a lot from it. Very nice piece of furniture.

Wonderful job! He should be proud of his accomplishment. I'd love to see more photos, for example of how the top looks closed.

Fantastic work! Congratulations.

Very nice. Tell us more about the school.

I encourage folks to also visit their local 4-H fairs as well. You will be amazed at what some kids can make!

Incredible job. As stated in some of the earlier posts, I hope he made a few mistakes along the way or he didn't learn a darn thing, cuz that thing looks perfect! It's just not right that a young kid could do work like that! Beautiful!

Your nephew should be proud of the desk, and you should be proud of your nephew! Must be nice to have something in common with him like woodworking.

Looks a heck of a lot nicer (and more complex) than the desk I built in high school shop class. Congratulations!

I've had one of those on my project list for years. Hope mine looks half that good when I get around to it. Any chance of a picture with the roll top down?
