I made this box today from a piece of wood my daughter gave me last Christmas (the cocobolo) and a scrap of canarywood I had sitting around. It's about 4.5" dia by 4.5" to the top of the lid. I was doing real good, hollowed out the box, made the lid with a nice tight fit, turned a finial handle for the lid from one of the corners I cut off the square cocobolo blank to get it round. Then when I turned it around to finish off the bottom I turned right through the bottom of the box. Sit it ended up with a plug in the bottom that matches the lid.

Curt, thats a very good looking box and nice save with pluging the bottom.....I think the two woods work well together

Curt - I believe that is called 'design improv' and in this case it works very well because the plug ties the two pieces together. Nice looking box and great color combination! Really like the flair of the handle!

I don't see any mistake there, that was a well planned design feature-- Great work!

That's pretty Curt! Is the plug grain offset a bit from the coco grain? Small enough that it won't matter. Just wondering. The piece just begs to be picked up and fondled. Can I say "fondled" on a turning forum?

Nice form, I really like the beads, they are a good touch. Cocobolo is one of my favorite woods to turn, and the canary wood sets it off beautifully.

Thanks everyone for all the nice comments.

Richard, I didn't even think to line up the grain of the plug, nor notice it wasn't. Now that's going to drive me nuts.

What a purty piece, Curt. And a very nice shape, too.

That is sure pretty wood and a fine turning. Nice save too.

How many of those "words" were uttered upon turning a cocobolo funnel?

nice piece and patch job but it still looks like there are some tool marks.
