Turned bird house designs??

A couple of years ago, my wife and I were traveling in up-state New York and we came across a fella selling bird houses that he turned out of tree limbs. The houses were turned in the shape of "acorns" and really looked nice. They were about a foot long, and had maybe a 8-10 inch diameter. I was not paying much attention to how he might have done it, so I have been kicking myself ever since. I just remember that they came apart for cleaning, but I don't know how he did it. Have any of you seen such a design/plan or know where I could find one? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Here is a rustic one I made awhile back. It is about 12 inches high. I attached the top with pocket hole screws, so I could take it apart and clean it. Had a Finch lay her eggs there earlier this summer.

I've made a few birdhouses but haven't quite come up with a good way to take them apart for cleaning. Some birds did nest in this one that hangs at the Ogden Nature Center and they cleaned it out later by just poking a wire inside and digging out the old nest.
