I have been looking without success for a 90 degree V groove router bit in high speed steel. Any ideas where to get one of these? It must be HSS, not carbide. I have found V groove bits in HSS, but all 60 degree.

I am working with a material called Alcuobond. For making grooves for bending the material they recommend grinding the end off of a HSS 90 degree V groove router bit so the bottom of the groove is flat. There are a few commercially available bits designed for this, but they are $75 each.

If I can't find a bit to modify it might be cheaper to have a local shop do the fabrication. I also have a friend with a sign shop that might work with the stuff.

Try these guys. I don't know what you're trying to make, but from your description, looks to me they have what you're trying to make. Flat bottom 90 v-groove. Hope the link works.

Why does it have to be HSS? Is that just so you can grind off the bottom? Kyle gave a pointer to a bit that already has the bottom flat.

Brian, I am very interested in how this works out for you....I have been considering doing the same.... what thickness alcubond are you using?

Never heard of the stuff.

But it must be what the discriminating deer hunter wants for a mobile blind.

I must be blind as everything I see there as far as flat bottom seems to be 60 degree.

I would happily use a reasonably priced carbide bit if I could find one.

After much searching I discovered that Amana and Onsrud both sell the special bit for folding Alcuobond and similiar materials. The cost is only around $50 instead of $75 so I might buy one of these bits and not deal with trying to modify an HSS bit.

One of the problems is most Amana dealers don't sell this bit and I guess I don't blame them as it is very specialized.

Sears used to carry one in their Crastman router bits. I have one at home that is 1/2" dia. I think Woodcraft has one on clearance. HSS V-groove (http://www.woodcraft.com/Catalog/ProductPage.aspx?prodid=8126) but I can't tell if it is a 90 degree one or not. There is also one atSatco (http://shop.vendio.com/satco/item/814080132/?s=1249890962) but I've never done business with them. I did a Google search for HSS V-groove router bit and got lots of hits.

Brian,
If you know the Amana part # for the bit you are looking for, try Carbide.com for the bit.

They seem to have a pretty wide selection of Amana bits and decient prices.

www.carbide.com

PS. They also have Onstrud bits too. I never heard of them but did see on their site.

Looks like you found it from Amana. They do a good job of the unique bits. You are right about being in stock, can't say I ever sold one or heard of the material. Amana will drop ship so getting them shouldn't be a problem.
