I have a gift certificate for Woodcraft, so that needs to be the source. In the future, I'm going to try my hand at making a Maloof style rocker. What files do I need for that project? Thanks, as always.

I would consider the following:

http://shop.woodcraft.com/Product/2000282/358/Cabinet-Rasp--2nd-Cut-%2849%29--takes-a-Medium-Handle.aspx

and,

http://shop.woodcraft.com/Product/2000282/379/Cabinet-Rasp--Smooth-Cut-%2850%29--takes-a-Medium-Handle.aspx

I would also get a handle for each one.

What do you want to file? If you're looking for rasps, the 49 and 50 are indeed awesome files. But, take a look at these Microplanes. Hope I did the link right. First time. Much cheaper, and better IMO.

Edit: Link worked! You can buy just the blades. Have different shapes, fine and coarse.

Speaking of cheaper, Lie-Nielsen offers the same files, the #49 and #50, for a good deal less than Woodcraft. Maybe there is a better price somewhere else, as well.

My recommendation was based on comments by Gary Rogowski, my own experience, and the mention in the original post of wanting to make a Maloof style rocker. I have not checked out the Microplane, but will look into it. Given the Woodcraft constraint, Microplane is a real consideration. Thanks for the lead, Kyle.

I have often seen the term the "Borg" used in this forum. I have no understanding of what it refers to.

My guess is it is a generic term that encompasses the Big Box stores, maybe like your Home Depots etc. How close am I or am I way off target?

Wow, looking at those prices, I beging to suspect my giant pack of files from Costco may only be worth what I paid for them:D

Why does the LN site make such a big point about "Never use a file without a handle."?

(and where do I put the handle on my 4-in-1?)

Most files have a tang which can injure you if used without a handle. The 4-in-1 is designed to be used without a handle. But I don't like a 4-in-1 because the stroke is too short and the file is hard to handle. Try a full size file and you'll see the difference.
