OK turners, is this the real deal or photo shop? All it said at the site where I found these was that the pics are of a world famous wood turner who made a 13 foot bowl on his tractor/lathe.

Here's a story (http://www.proserpinewoodturners.com/The_Big_Bowl.html)about some guys who made a bowl that was 8'6". If you can do that, I suppose it's just a matter of scaling up.

Seeing the picture though, I wonder about a photo shop job. I just wouldn't think it was safe for the 2nd guy watching to stand right there.

But then if you used a power tool, like a chainsaw, to do the cutting instead of a chisel, you wouldn't have to rotate the bowl very fast at all.

Looks real, but I wonder what you'd use it for. Maybe it was just for some contest (who can turn the biggest bowl).

I vaguely remember those photos.....seems someone posted here in the past to a German website and there was the story and photos.

if it is real... what the heck sort of tree did the wood come from?

It looks as though the bowl is comprised of several pieces of wood glued together. A laminate of sorts, just on a large scale. Perhaps there is a term for that type of large construction other than "laminate"

That is in fact the real deal. The videos have been around for a couple years.
