I am building a few new cabinets for my kitchen project. I plan to use cope and stick doors and drawer fronts. The bits I will be using are shaker profile, MLCS #8837. The width of the rails and stiles will be 2 1/4". Could someone tell how to calculate the length of the rails?

Many thanks!!

In your case, take the door width, subtract 4 1/2" for the 2 stile widths, then add your tenon depth back to it on both sides. Im not sure what the tenon depth is on that set ( probably 3/8" ).

So, door width, subtract 3 3/4".

Melvin:

Got tired of the pencil and paper routine. Wrote an Excel program to do the figgering. Here it is you can download see if this makes it easy.

If you don't want to use a program for your doors. The easiest way ( if you have some sort of stop system for the saw you use to crosscut with ) , is to set your stop at the door width and use a spacer block for the amount you need to cut off ( in your case a 3 3/4" spacer )

I used this system for years until a got a program to lay out my doors.
