I'm thinking of making a project that will have a crown molding similar to the pic and was wondering if anyone can point me to any information on how this was done a couple hundred years ago. At this point it will be an exclusively neander project. I could go about doing it my way but that would be a bit of a fumble in the dark and I don't see the point of trying to re-invent the wheel so I rather read up on how the masters did it.

No real secret technique that I've ever heard of (not that that means anything). It was basically all carved with gouges and refined with shaped scrapers.

Robert is correct. They cut the inside curve and outside curve (bowsaw) and then chopped every thing with square cuts to begin with and then used carving chisels to refine the curves. That is exactly the way I did a highboy gooseneck molding and suprisingly once you get started, it's not that hard.
