While looking for a particular type of fastener that seems impossible to find, a 6-40 knurled thumb screw, this site came up with a lot of printable charts and thread gauges. It may be useful to some:

Yeah, that sounds like a real oddball. I think your only off the shelf solution will be the press on plastic knobs for socket head screws. Both of the parts are available from McMaster-Carr. But you'll probably wind up with 99 spares of each.

The alternative, and I'm guessing what you want, is to get a 6-32 screw and cut it off, drill and tap for 6-40, and Loctite in a set screw. Best of both worlds, in a way, as you could have a nice brass knob with an alloy steel thread.

6-40? Are you sure it isn't 6-48? Tried Mcmaster Carr yet?

Yep. Things change, so they get a look every now and again.

The screws are for an old protractor/steel rule. I am using brass screws currently and it works. Have one of the originals and every once in awhile, I do a search for the thumb screws. Usually run into interesting pages, thought this was something others might enjoy.
