I finished building this last night. It is based on the one Bill Grumbine sells and it uses a laser to measure the thickness of the bottom of the bowl. Kind of like a captured hollowing rig uses a laser to measure side thickness.

Thanks for looking.

Looking good, i guess that'll mean your not gonna make any more funnels like the rest of us.

I sure hope not. :D

Jason, I really like your depth gauge and especially the tool caddy you have mounted on the ways. Two things in one post to copy!!

Didn't even notice the tool caddy until you mentioned it. SWEET!.....

What did you use for the laser and how did you mount it?

I got the laser at Walmart for $4.88. I mounted it with a rubberband. :D

Jason - looks like it should work great! I really like your high-tech laser mounting system!

That looks great, Jason. I've thought of making something similar but haven't done it yet. The tool caddy is also a great idea.

BTW, I read that the green rubber bands are way more accurate than the beige ones. :p

I should of thought of that!

I think I saw upgrade kits at Office Depot. :D

Seriously, your mounting idea looks perfect for the intended use. ;)

Jason, I think I understand how that works but could you explain? I'm thinking you point the laser right at the tip of the rod. Correct? I'd like to have a more accurate way of determing bowl depth but for now I only use the crude method of guaging it with the bowl gouge length.

You are correct.

I like the set up. Didn't know you could get the laser at Walmart. I watched Bill Grumbine at the Loess Hills Turners a couple weekends ago. He demonstrated that laser unit and it should work great. Looks like you did not have to spend hours to get it functioning. Now off to get the laser.

I was there too and had a great time, did you attend one of the hands on days also?

Picked up laser at Office Depot for $7. Laser doesn't shoot perfectly straight, has proved to be an asset. By twisting the laser housing I can pinpoint the edge of the laser to be tangent to the tip of the centering dowel(making it very accurate). I have had the lathe about two months and can't turn enough. It is a dream to turn on.

Jason,
If you have another vertical rod, permanently connecting the top and bottom (horizonatl) rods, they will move in unison and the measurement will skip a step.
The rubberband clinches the sale for me!!
