In another thread, Richard Madison mentioned this mobius ribbon that I posted a while back on the WOW site and I realized that I never posted it here. It's canarywood, 3 1/2 bottomless bowls, turned thin between the edges for piercing, about 14" wide. It was a wedding gift, so the bride and groom's names and the date are included in the piercing. Those that may have seen my Volume Three DVD may recognize this.

Malcolm,

I cannot come up with the words that would do justice to that piece. "Very nice!", "Very cool!", and "Exquisite" all seem trite.

Thank you for sharing. That's an inspirational piece and it should be treasured by the couple it was given to. May it, and their marriage, last forever.

is this done by turning the bowls, then cutting them up and gluing the pieces in to the ribbon?

Thanks for the comments.

I really can't give a complete tutorial on “ribbon” construction – not enough time. Very briefly, the technique requires turning stave-constructed bottomless bowls, cutting them apart, and re-joining them into various shapes. Most ribbon forms require a 45-degree bowl slope angle, along with consistent bowl diameters and wall thicknesses. A couple of years ago, the summer issue of American Woodturner published my article on ribbon construction.

Thanks Malcolm. This is the one I wanted Wally to see since he is so skilled at piercing. Maybe we can coax him into doing a ribbon.

Malcolm that is truly one beautiful piece, but I do have one question. What do you use to do the piercing?

Malcom, This is one of the reasons I really need to try some segmenting! These inspire me to do more, but there is not enough time in a day!

Great job!

Jeff

Malcolm that is truly one beautiful piece, but I do have one question. What do you use to do the piercing?

Gerold, I use a PowerCrafter, an air-powered rotary carving tool, available through Treeline.
